Depression Awareness Week underway
Depression Awareness Week is underway and a number of local fundraising events have been organised as part of the event. The initiative is running from April 22nd - 28th 2012 and attempts to shed light on - and end the stigma associated with - the condition.
The week is organised by Depression Alliance, which is encouraging people to get involved in the effort by holding fundraisers, making donations and even joining the charity itself.
It stated: "Thanks to your support depression awareness week is one of the most successful initiatives in the campaign calendar."
The start of the event has even been mentioned in parliament, where a new Scottish motion was tabled to note the beginning of the week and explained its relevance with the understanding that one-in-four individuals will experience a mental health issue at some point in their lives.
It acknowledged the support given to the issue by organisations such as Action on Depression and congratulated its work with the University of Glasgow that has seen the creation of the online interactive course Living Life to the Full.
