A fear of feeling guilty might be key to some forms of OCD

A new study aims to answer why previous research into guilt-proneness and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder has produced inconsistent results.

There's increasing recognition that our vulnerability to mental health problems isn't just related to how prone we are to certain emotions but also our sensitivity towards them, a concept that new research has looked to apply to the relationship between guilt and OCD.

Previous research into whether guilt-proneness is an OCD risk factor has produced inconsistent results, but the new study from Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy aimed to discover whether this was because the risk factor was actually guilt sensitivity.

Lead researcher Gabriele Melli and his colleagues devised a scale to measure participants' guilt sensitivity and found that there was a strong correlation between those who ranked towards the top of the scale and OCD related symptoms.
