BPS Position Statement on Therapies Attempting to Change Sexual Orientation (2013)

The attached document, prepared by the Psychology of Sexualities Section Committee, lays out the Society's clear opposition to any form of psychological, psychotherapeutic, or counselling treatments that view same-sex sexual orientations as pathological.

The BPS believes that people of same-sex orientations should be regarded as equal members of society, with the same rights, responsibilities, and freedoms as any other.

Therefore we fully oppose the implementation of any intervention which purports to be able to change (convert) sexual orientation, or which asserts that same-sex sexual orientations are a form of illness.
