To all Member Networks and Boards,
I am writing to invite you to participate in a Society wide public engagement project, to be launched in 2014.
The centenary of the First World War provides the Society with an opportunity to commemorate a watershed in the discipline of psychology. The war marked a turning point in the development of many different areas of psychology. This project is an opportunity to draw together different Society networks to contribute to a 5yr project that would not only allow the Society to commemorate, revisit and understand the importance of this event in world history to the development of psychology today ,but to look at how psychology contributed to the nation & society at the time.
I will be organising a number of cross-network, cross-society events/projects centrally, but also want to ensure I am including any planned work that may already be in the pipeline and also provide support for ideas you may have around the Centenary. As the co-ordinator for the project, I would be most grateful if you were able to drop me a line about any events you may have planned already, or are thinking about planning. Ideally, I would like to be able to provide a psychology hub for commemoration events and to include and support as much as possible across the discipline, hopefully identifying opportunities for joint working as early as possible.
We are planning a range of activities in association with the Centenary and will be firming up our schedule for 2014 in the autumn. There will be overarching themes for each year from 2015 - 2018, in order to allow us to include as much psychology as possible, looking at issues such as revolution, the home front, the role of women, psychological and physical trauma, modern psychology and it's development in contributing to warfare/peace since the First World War. I will circulate the agreed themes for 2015 - 2018 as soon as they have been approved towards the end of the year.
I would like to include as much as possible, so whether it's an event, idea for an article in The Psychologist, archive material, project or anything linked to the First World War, I would like to be able to include it within the Society's overall commemoration plans. As a central co-ordinator, I may also be able to identify where work might be similar and put people in touch to team up, where appropriate.
To that end, please could you get in touch by Friday 6th September, with any projects/plans/ideas you may have, to enable me to include as much as possible in the detailed project planning. I will be more than happy to discuss anything in relation to the Centenary prior to that, should you have any questions or queries.
