Revised Information Regarding Applications to Membership of the DSEP

There are currently 3 available routes that can be followed by applicants, with the GBR, looking to apply for Chartered Status and Full membership of the DSEP:
  • The ‘accredited-course route’ - where applicants have completed a Society-accredited MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology and a period of supervised practice in sport and/or exercise psychology, the total combined period being not less than 3-years of full-time (or part-time equivalent).
  • The ‘approved-course route’ - where applicants have completed a non Society-accredited MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology (approved by the DSEP Admissions Committee representatives) and a period of supervised practice in sport and/or exercise psychology, the total combined period being not less than 3-years of full-time (or part-time equivalent).
  • The ‘5-year experience route’ - where applicants apply on the basis of 5-years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) supervised experience in sport and/or exercise experience, approved by the DSEP’s Admissions Committee representatives.
However, with the recent implementation of the Society's Stage 2 Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology, the routes to membership will have to be revised to incorporate this and ensure that this is the only route to Chartered Status in this area. This will also mean that these existing routes will eventually need to be closed.

New route (for those who begin their postgraduate training from September 2008)

For candidates who begin their postgraduate training from September 2008, the following route will need to be followed in order to become a Chartered Sport and/or Exercise Psychologist:

Stage 1 training which may be gained by:

EITHER: Successfully completing a Society-accredited MSc course at a Higher Education Institution (HEI);
OR: Successfully completing a postgraduate qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology between 1st September 2004 and the 30th September 2008 and applying to have this training course approved by our Admissions Committee;
OR: Successfully completing the Society’s own Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (Stage 1)

FOLLOWED BY

Stage 2 training (to be undertaken following completion of Stage 1 training). This may be gained by:

EITHER: Successfully completing a Society-accredited Stage 2 programme at a Higher Education Institution (HEI)
OR: Successfully completing the Society’s own Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (Stage 2).
Only those who have met the requirements of both stages of this training are eligible to apply to the Society for Full Membership of the Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology and recognition as a Chartered Psychologist.

The criteria for In Training Membership of the DSEP, has been revised as follows:

  • In Training members of the Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology should hold the Graduate Basis for Registration and be enrolled on a Society-accredited postgraduate training course (equivalent to Stage 1 of the Society’s Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology) or be enrolled on the Society’s Stage 2 Qualification in Sport and Exercise (or a Society-accredited D-Level equivalent).

Closure dates

  • The ‘accredited-course route’ - Candidates who have started on an accredited-MSc prior to 2008 will be able to apply on this route until 30th September 2011.
  • The ‘approved-course route’ - This route is only applicable to those who have completed their approved MSc courses between September 2004 and 30th September 2008. The route will be left open until 30th September 2010.
  • The ‘5-year experience route’ - It should also be noted that the ‘5year-route’ will be formally closed on the 30th September 2010.

Closure of Special Case route to membership of the DSEP

Statute 12(3)(a)(iii) was employed as a means of grandparenting appropriately qualified individuals into Founder membership of the DSEP. Founder membership of the DSEP closed in December 2004. However, appropriate candidates are still being admitted through the facility of special case GBR under Statute 12(3)(a)(iii).

A recent proposal was put before the Society's MPTB to close this route and ensure that the stringent GBR requirements that apply to the other practitioner Divisions become applicable in the same way to the DSEP, but that notice be given of the withdrawal of this benefit.

This proposal was supported by the Board and it was agreed that the special case route to GBR to applicants to the DSEP by the 30th September 2009.
