Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC)
UK graduates
Any psychology graduate can become a Graduate Member of the Society. However, to work as a Chartered Psychologist it is also necessary to achieve the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) and then undertake further Society-accredited training before being eligible for entry onto the List of Chartered Psychologists.
At present it is not legally necessary to register as a Chartered Psychologist to work as a psychologist, but many practitioners find registration an asset. Employers often prefer to appoint a Chartered Psychologist because the title is the public's guarantee that the person is properly trained and qualified, and is answerable to an independent professional body.
The easiest way to achieve GBC is to take a Society-accredited honours degree. If your course is not accredited, or your degree is not in psychology, then you can gain GBC by:
- Taking a conversion course which effectively converts your degree to the equivalent of an honours degree with psychology as the main subject
Further details about the courses should be obtained direct from the universities. For a listing of all UK University Psychology Departments visit the University of Wales, Bangor links page.
