Snakes in suits: when psychopaths go to work

Psychopaths are not confined to prisons - they exist everywhere. Indeed their cold-blooded ability to manipulate others without remorse, coupled with a veneer of charm, can make them extremely successful in many walks of life including big business and politics. Professor Robert Hare, of the University of British Columbia and one of the world's leading authority on psychopathy, will be explaining how industry can identify psychopaths during a public lecture at Cardiff University on Tuesday 13 January 2004. The lecture, which is sponsored by the Welsh branch of the British Psychological Society and The School of Psychology at Cardiff, will specifically look at psychopathic behaviour in the workplace and the tools Professor Hare has devised to help businesses spot psychopaths before its too late. Prof Robert Snowden of the School of Psychology at Cardiff University said: “Professor Hare's work has defined the concept of the psychopath for this generation of scientists. The extension of this work from the prison into the workplace holds great promise to prevent the trail of havoc, lost pensions, and fraud perpetrated by a few individuals.” Anyone who would like attend the lecture should contact Elaine Rees, tel 029 2087 5453, for tickets.
