Psychologists focus on work at Brighton conference

More than 300 psychologists from around the UK and further afield are meeting in Brighton on 13th January 2010 for the British Psychological Society Division of Occupational Psychology Annual Conference.

This year’s event features keynote speeches from Will Hutton, Executive Vice Chair of The Work Foundation and Dr. John Mahoney-Philips, Global Head of Human Capital UBS AG, as well as the latest research in occupational psychology, including:

• Psychological intervention helps incapacity benefit claimants get back to work, Steve Kellet from the University of Sheffield and Darren Bickerstaffe and colleagues from the South Yorkshire Condition Management Programme.

• Training in emotional resilience could protect the wellbeing of trainee social workers - an occupational group who are highly vulnerable to work-related stress, Professor Gail Kinman and Louise Grant of the University of Bedfordshire.

• Professor Gail Kinman, together with Obrene McFall and Joanna Rodriguez from the University of Bedfordshire examined the levels of ‘emotional labour’, psychological health and job satisfaction of 188 members of the clergy in the UK.

• In pursuit of happy, healthy, stress-free employees, psychologists urge companies to allow employees to rate their managers’ ability to manage, Emma Donaldson-Feilder, from Affinity Health at Work.
