In March 2008 the Higher Education Funding Council for England decided that Senate House Library should no longer receive special funding to maintain its status as a national research library, and that the University of London should reconsider the role of Senate House. A consultation among the constituent colleges took place in 2008. As a stakeholder in Senate House, the Society was permitted to make representations to the consultation process (see Senate House Library consultation response). The report on the consultation was presented in December 2008. The final decision was made May 2009, when the Board of Trustees of the Library accepted a recommendation for the library to continue as a collective resource of the Colleges but with some refocusing and cost savings (see announcement). The implications for the Society's collection were soon after clarified at a meeting with the Library's acting co-directors, at which a firm intention to maintain the Psychology Library intact was expressed, while the details of a new Service User Agreement with the Society would remain to be negotiated.
