Aims of the project
The overall aim is to create a collection of oral history interviews to extend the John C. Kenna Audio Archive and to complement the collection of documents and visual material in the Society's history of psychology archives. This will provide a record of the recollections of psychologists during the formative years of the development of professional, academic and organised psychology in the UK, and, of course, as time goes on, a record of later developments. We hope this will grow into a rich resource for future research on the history of psychology itself and of the British Psychological Society.
We would like to generate a widely representative archive of accounts across different areas of study and professional experience in psychology. Oral history adds a human context and recognises the value of individual experience, therefore interviews will concentrate on collecting first-hand recollections of education and professional training and of the variety of personal and professional issues related to being a psychologist in different contexts and over time. The taped interviews will be stored as sound recordings at the History of Psychology Centre.
How to participate
If you would like to be involved either as an interviewer or an interviewee, please contact Mike Maskill at the HoPC office in London.
If you have a suggestion for an appropriate person to be interviewed, please let us know. An appropriate person is really anyone who has interesting things to say about their experiences of any aspect of psychology (study, practice, teaching, research, departmental life, people, events, etc.) and is not necessarily an eminent psychologist.
Roles within the project
Interviewers
We can loan recording equipment and cover travelling expenses. An 'Interviewers' Pack' will also be provided.
Interviewees
Your name and details will be added to our list and we will keep in touch regarding when we will be able to interview you. We may also be interested in any archival material you have that could be incorporated into the History of Psychology Centre archive. If you have anything you would like to donate, please tell us in advance. In due course one of our interviewers will contact you to arrange the interview.
Please note that you are free to set the terms on which your interview can be accessed, for example you may wish access to be delayed for a number of years, or you may request that certain portions of the interview be kept confidential for a specified period of time.
