History of Psychology Centre

The History of Psychology Centre is responsible for the British Psychological Society’s archive and library activities, for supporting and promoting research and teaching in the history of psychology, and for public engagement activities in the history of psychology.

We are planning to develop this website into a major history of psychology research resource devoted primarily to British psychology. By the end of 2008 we intend to make available online a detailed catalogue of the archive holdings, with links to other major catalogues.
Until March 2006 the archive was housed at the Society's offices at 33 John Street, London WC1. On 6 March the offices closed pending relocation to new premises in Tabernacle Street, EC2. There being no permanent home immediately available for the HOPC, the collection was temporarily transferred into secure storage.

Since September 2006 all of the individual psychologists' archives and many early Society documents have once again been made available to researchers, at the newly opened Tabernacle Street offices. Until a new permanent home has been arranged for the entire collection, we are able to offer only partial onsite research services. However, access to any document in the archive can be arranged in some circumstances (see HOPC Services).

History and Philosophy of Psychology Section

The History and Philosophy of Psychology Section is not formally connected with the History of Psychology Centre, rather it is an established network of members of the British Psychological Society with an interest in the history of psychology or in the philosophical aspects of the subject. It provides opportunities to exchange ideas and promote the discussion of these interests within the Society.

Senate House Library

The Society's official collection of books, journals, subsystem periodicals, etc. is held at Senate House Library, University of London. The arrangements with Senate House come under the auspices of the History of Psychology Centre. The Society is continually adding to its collection by regular deposit of its own publications and by subscriptions and exchange agreements with about 140 academic journal titles.

Society members can obtain a reference ticket free of charge and a borrowers ticket at a discounted rate. More details at the Society Library webpage.

Spare journals

Part of our collection of Society journals is no longer needed and is being offered to any institutional or public library willing to take them. Click here for a full list. If you would like all or some of these please contact Peter Dillon-Hooper (e-mail: petdil@bps.org.uk; tel: 0116 252 9528).
