Using Trauma Focused CBT to work with PTSD
This two day workshop will offer participants a firm foundation for working with PTSD using Trauma-Focused CBT, underpinned by a relational philosophy. Current theories of PTSD and the role of memory processes in the maintenance of PTSD will be explored, along with case formulation and treatment. The CBT process of Reliving will be explored in detail. Reliving is regarded as the gold standard by many in the treatment of PTSD and also supported by a substantial evidence base. Delegates will learn how to use Reliving in a sensitive, safe way that respects the relationship between client and therapist.
The workshop will take place on 30 & 31 January - attendence at both days is mandatory.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to any event that results in psychological trauma. Diagnostic symptoms for PTSD include re-experiencing the original trauma through flashbacks or nightmares, avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma, and increased arousal - such as difficulty falling or staying asleep, anger, and hypervigilance.
The workshop is a ‘how to do trauma focused CBT’ and draws on the clinical models of Ehlers and Clark, and theoretical models of Brewin et. al. (1996)
Day 1 will offer participants a firm foundation for working with PTSD using CBT, based on comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge and underpinned by the humanistic base that we value as Counselling Psychologists. Contemporary theories of PTSD , including the Ehlers & Clark (2000) model and the role of memory processing in the maintenance of PTSD will be discussed. Assessment, formulation and treatment will be covered. Teaching will include presentation, interactive discussion, practical exercises, role play and discussion of anonomised case material.
Day 2 will focus on treatment of PTSD. Work will focus on the Ehlers & Clark (2000) model and the CBT process of Reliving. Reliving is regarded as the gold standard by many in the treatment of PTSD. It is also supported by a substantial evidence base. Delegates will learn how to use reliving in a sensitive way that respects the relationship between client and therapist and respond to the complexities of PTSD in a creative, ethical and effective manner. Teaching will include presentation, interactive discussion, practical exercises, role play and discussion of anonomised case material.
