Understanding and assessing personality disorder: Training in the International Personality Disorder Examination: IPDE
The training focuses on the administration and scoring of the gold standard for personality disorder assessment - the International Personality Disorder Examination (IPDE).
The training will comprise case material and the scoring of clinical videos.
The training aims to provide a broad outline of the assessment, management and understanding of personality disorder focusing on the following:
- Conceptualisations of personality disorder;
- Types of disorder and their co-morbidity with mental illness;
- Distinguishing personality disorder from psychopathy;
- Linking personality disorder to violence and aggression;
- Managing the manifestations of personality disorder;
- Background to the development of the IPDE;
- Structure and content of the IPDE;
- Observing and scoring clinical interviews for the IPDE.
The core aim of the training is to ensure that delegates feel confident when assessing for personality disorder using the IPDE, and obtain an enhanced understanding of personality disorder and the issues that this poses.
The trainers are Professor Jane L. Ireland P.hD and Fiona Wilks-Riley. Both are Registered Practising Forensic Psychologists and Chartered Scientists. Collectively they have over thirty years of experience of psychological practice. Both have considerable experience of working with and assessing personality disordered clients, including holding senior positions within a high secure forensic facility which specialises in personality disorder.
The administration and scoring of the IPDE is carefully controlled since it represents a diagnostic tool. The course is open to a range of professionals for CPD purposes (e.g. Social Workers, Nurses, Trainees) but please note that anyone who wishes to attend with the aim of being able to utilise the IPDE for diagnostic purposes must be Registered Practising Psychologists (HPC practising registered). Psychologists who wish to complete this training in order to use the IPDE beyond CPD purposes (e.g. to diagnose) must be a full member of an applied Division, e.g. Clinical, Counselling or Forensic Psychology.
