The BPS Community Psychology Section is delighted to welcome Ncazelo Ncube to the UK.

Following her keynote presentation at the Community Psychology Festival, we will be hosting Ncazelo to run a two-day practitioner workshop in her pioneering Tree of Life methodology.

The Tree of Life methodology, based on narrative therapy principles, was co-developed by Ncazelo Ncube and David Denborough in 2006.

Since its development it is now used in several countries in the world as a counselling methodology including the UK, Australia, USA, Canada, Turkey, Russia, Norway, Netherlands, Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, South Africa, Zimbabwe and many others.

It has been used in several counselling contexts such as work with older adults, with people with learning disabilities, with parents, with children and young people, with adults living with HIV, with people living with cancer, with refugees and ethnic minority groups.

Through her organisation Phola, Ncazelo provides training and supervision throughout the countries where the methodology is used to support practitioners to remain rooted to the values and principles that inform it. The training offered by Ncazelo Ncube seeks to ensure fidelity in the use, application and adaptation of the methodology and to contribute towards promoting culturally sensitive therapies. Since developing the Tree of Life Ncazelo has developed other culturally sensitive counselling tools; COURRAGE Methodology and Narratives in the Suitcase project.

This two-day workshop with be an introduction to Tree of Life, specifically for practitioners. The training is relevant for all practitioners wishing to use the Tree of Life in their work, with an opportunity to develop skills in working with the methodology.

The training covers the following areas:

  • Foundations and the history of Tree of Life
  • Narrative Therapy and Imbeleko principles that inform the Tree of Life Methodology
  • Four parts of the Tree of Life Methodology with practical experiential exercises

People who complete the course can start using the methodology in their work. An option for signing up for Skype supervision with Ncazelo Ncube is available.

Who is the course intended for?

All professionals looking to use this technique in their practice, including those who work in the NHS, private practice as well as in community organisations, not-for-profits. It is open to both BPS and non-BPS members, and we expect it maybe of particular interest to Narrative Therapists.
