This workshop will provide frontline professionals with tools to work with people who self-harm on an ongoing basis. The workshop aims to introduce the topic of self-harm as a way of coping. It reviews current research and treatment options.
This workshop gives you the opportunity to explore why people resort to self-harm in order to express their pain and anguish. There will be discussion on the links between self- harm and suicide. Current approaches to intervention and treatment will be presented.
The workshop explores attitudes and the effects of working/caring for a person who self-harms. You will learn more about how to support people who self-harm to understand why they do it and how to bring it under control.
The workshop has been designed in conjunction with people with lived experience of using self-harming behaviour as a way of coping.
This workshop is suitable for frontline professionals.

- Increased knowledge on self harm, the reasons why people engage on self harming behaviour, who is at higher risk and what are the available treatment options.
Facilitator: Maria Naranjo MBPsS
Maria Naranjo is fully qualified as Psychotherapist by Malaga University (Spain) and is a Chartered Psychotherapist registered with Colegio de Psicologos de Andalucia Oriental, Spain. Maria is also registered with COSCA Counselling and Psychotherapy in Scotland as Associate Member. Maria holds a Postgraduate Teaching Qualification and has trained as a trainer with EVOC (Edinburgh Voluntary Organisations Council). Maria is an ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) trainer.
Maria has been working with people who self harm for almost a decade, has delivered frontline services, line managed staff and volunteers,provided strategic and managerial support to services aimed at people who self-harm and has delivered training to nearly 3,000 professionals.
