From Timid to Tiger: Parenting the Anxious Child

This workshop will outline the Timid to Tiger approach to managing anxiety in children aged nine years or below. Timid to Tiger is an entirely parenting-based approach. It is based on evidence that anxious children benefit substantially from a parenting style that is clear, calm and consistent.

To this end, the ten-session programme helps parents to learn a new approach to managing their children, using attachment-based play, lots of praise and reward for good and confident behaviours, and gentle disciplinary techniques and planned ignoring for unwanted behaviours.

In addition, parents are taught a number of simple cognitive-behavioural techniques for managing their children’s fear and worry. In particular, we cover graded fear exposure, problem solving, and behavioural experiments.

Provisional timetable
09:30 Registration/tea and coffee
10:00 Workshop starts (there will be a 30min break for lunch)
16:30 Workshop ends

This workshop will give a brief overview of each session and cover many of the core techniques that are employed.

This workshop is suitable for any mental health professional working with anxious children. Workshop delegates will get most out of the day if they already understand the basics of CBT for anxiety, and have some knowledge (and preferably experience) of behaviourally-based parent-training interventions.

Facilitator: Dr Sam Cartwright-Hatton CPsychol

Sam started her career by carrying out a DPhil at Oxford, under the supervision of Adrian Wells. The subject of this was a MetaCognitive model of Generalised Anxiety Disorder in Adults. During subsequent clinical psychology training in Manchester, she developed an interest in anxiety in childhood. On qualifying, she joined the Manchester clinical course as academic tutor, whilst working half-time as a clinical child psychologist. Eighteen months after qualification, she undertook a 3-year NHS executive training fellowship to develop her research into childhood anxiety with Professor Richard Harrington. Upon completion of this fellowship she rejoined the Manchester clinical course as Senior Lecturer. She has recently completed a 4-year MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship, developing a new intervention for families of anxious children. In 2009, she was awarded the British Psychological Society 'May Davidson Award'.
