This workshop aims to assist participants who are contemplating becoming an expert witness and those with experience improve the standard of their own written reports.

The Expert Witness Report is the foundation of Expert Witness work and a poorly written report may lead to questions about the Expert’s competence. Attendees will learn how to prepare reports which are more valuable to the commissioning solicitor and the court as well as defensible, so less vulnerable to cross examination in the witness box.

This workshop is one of three offered. It is strongly recommended that those attending this workshop have also attended the Level 1 workshop.

Learning outcomes and objectives

Participants will:

  • Understand the importance of a well written report in the legal system
  • Understand the relationship between a well written defendable report and their subsequent experience in the witness box
  • Understand what the legal profession are looking for in an expert report

Facilitators:

Susan van Scoyoc C Psychol CSci AFBPsS

Susan is a Chartered Psychologist and Chartered Scientist. She is a member of the Division of Counselling Psychology, the Division of Health Psychology, and is a founding member of the Register of Psychologists Specialising in Psychotherapy. Susan is a UK Registered Expert Witness working in areas such as human rights, family law and cognitive testing.


Co-Facilitator: Michael Bird LLB

Michael is a solicitor with extensive experience of the legal profession. Before qualifying as a solicitor he regularly gave evidence in court when working for the police and then moved to the other side of the witness box, instructing expert witnesses in a variety of legal settings.
