Enterprise Development for Counselling Psychologists in Independent Practice

This workshop is suitable for counselling psychologists currently working in independent practice who are new to the process of bidding for mental health work with the NHS and other commissioning bodies. It will provide an overview of:

  • Understanding  the NHS mental health marketplace
  • Essential business structure: workforce, governance and finance
  • Assessing strengths and weaknesses as a potential bidder
  • Finding the right projects and partners
  • Stages of bid completion
  • Weathering interviews
  • Managing growth: staff development, relationship management, service delivery and data systems 

Presenters will give insights into tendering projects they have been involved with, sharing learning processes and pitfalls encountered on the adventurous path to successful psychological service growth. The workshop will combine teaching, group discussion and guided personal work time.

Facilitator: Caroline Vermes MBPsS

Caroline is director of an independent Manchester-based, NHS-commissioned psychological therapies service providing treatment for eating disorders and specialist weight management. She has worked in general and specialised adult psychological services in the USA and UK since 1993. She has regularly delivered training workshops on the treatment of eating and weight disorders since 1999. Her work at this stage is primarily focussed on counselling psychology service management, programme and staff development, and training. Caroline holds a Masters in Counselling Psychology from Rutgers University, USA (1994) and is currently enrolled on the BPS Qualification in Counselling Psychology.  In 2011 she completed the LEAD Business Leadership Programme at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School, where she remains involved with the Centre for Enterprise and the Knowledge Action Network.
