Developing Leadership Skills: Presence and Resilience

Leadership of Psychological therapy services, teams and departments has never been more important, yet many in the Applied Psychology professions believe their core training leaves them ill-equipped for the challenge. This workshop will focus on cutting edge leadership theory, arguing that the ability to be mindfully ‘present’ and respond to multiple, (often competing), demands, are more valuable ‘transformational’ skills than traditional ‘strategic’ styles. Participants will be introduced to the concept of ‘Presence’ and learn how this sits within traditional leadership theory. In particular, skills of mindful self-awareness, relationship building and responsiveness to the environment will be highlighted. Presence as ‘Character Strengths’ will be explored and participants will learn more about their own ‘resting presence’ and how to use this to maximum effect at work. Links between Presence and Resilience will be highlighted, with opportunities to assess personal levels of well-being and resilience, and review this in light of recent work in Positive Psychology. Finally, application to current work situation will be highlighted via work on Polarity Mapping and Management.

This workshop will be of interest to Applied Psychologists in any service area with some leadership work/service development as part of their brief. Also any Applied Psychologist seeking more awareness of their personal style at work and how sustainable this is.

There will be an online metric for all delegates to conmplete before attending the workshop.

  • Learn about Personal Leadership Style and gain awareness of Personal impact
  • Learn about the concept of ‘Presence’ and discover how this increases adaptability and responsiveness
  • Assess your own wellbeing and resilience
  • Assess challenges specific to your working context and discuss ways to respond differently.
  • Discover the power of Character Strengths and how these increase sustainable leadership

Facilitator: Dr Sally Denham-Vaughan CPsychol AFBPsS

Dr Sally Denham-Vaughan is a Clinical & Counselling Psychologist and an Accredited Coaching Psychologist and coaching supervisor with the International Society for Coaching Psychology. Until retiring in April 2012, she held a range of senior leadership positions in the NHS, including work as both a District Psychologist and Clinical Lead for Worcestershire’s Primary Care Mental Health/IAPT service. Latterly, she specialised in Leadership Development, large service redesign and care pathway development and led on Clinical Developments in PBR, (Payment by Results). She is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the British Gestalt Journal, International Faculty Associate at the Pacific Gestalt Institute in California and Board Advisor at The Relational Center in Los Angeles.
