Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness

Many clinical and health psychologist now have some experience and knowledge of methods from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) or mindfulness-based approaches. This workshop is designed to build on that experience and knowledge, particularly within physical health conditions. A review of model and processes from ACT will be presented. The remainder of the workshop will consist of (a) experiential demonstrations and exercise, (b) discussion of problems participants encounter in delivery of these methods, and (c) practice and rehearsal of ways to manage these difficulties.

This workshop is for anyone who wishes to extend their understanding of ACT and mindfulness based approaches. It will be particularly rewarding if participants have prior experience in introductory workshops in ACT or mindfulness, and if they have done background reading in the area. It will be more rewarding still for participants who have experience using these method sand who wish to improve their skills.

Facilitator

This workshop is facilitated by Lance M. McCracken. Lance is a Professor of Behavioral Medicine in the Health Psychology Section of King's College London. He is also a Consultant Clinical Psychologist at the INPUT pain management centre at St Thomas' Hospital. Before that he was Clinical Director of the Centre for Pain Services and Head of Psychology at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, in Bath. He is on the editorial board of Health Psychology, Journal of Behavioral Medicine, European Journal of Pain, Pain Management, and The Journal of Pain. He has published over 120 research papers and chapters, authored a book on acceptance and mindfulness-based methods for chronic pain and edited a book on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness in Behavioral Medicine. The latter was published by New Harbinger press in 2011.
