Using and Understanding Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace (A Practitioners' Guide to the EBW)
Facilitator
Stephen Walker
Who should attend
This workshop is designed for psychologists, coaches, managers and human resources practitioners who wish to understand how to use Emotional Intelligence to improve the selection and development of personnel. The workshop is a practical session designed for practitioners who use psychometric tests in their day-to-day business as well as those who are not BPS Level A or Level B trained. The pre-workshop reading that is completed before the workshop ensures that delegates will all have the same level of theoretical understanding needed to take part in the workshop’s practical exercises.
Workshop overview
This is an intense, interactive workshop that will enable delegates to explore the personal and organisational implications of emotions and behaviours at work (Emotional Intelligence). The emphasis is on becoming a skilled practitioner of a new online Emotional Intelligence assessment and expert report system. The workshop will enable delegates to explore their own, and others, preferred Behavioural Style, Personality Dimensions and Emotional Intelligence through completion of the instrument itself and in working with other delegates.
Aims of the workshop
The one-day workshop is facilitated by one of the designers of the EBW and it provides the opportunity for a new user of the system to discuss the practical application of the tool with an experienced practitioner. The workshop focuses on understanding Emotional Intelligence and how human behaviour influences performance at work as well as training delegates to use the EBW system.
By the end of the workshop delegates will:
- understand how emotions and behaviours at work effect the performance of both individuals and organisations.
- know how Emotional Intelligence can be used to select or develop successful people.
- know how to maximise the feedback from the EBW report.
- have developed their interview and feedback skills so they are able to use the EBW system effectively.
Projected outcomes and benefits of attending
The workshop emphasis is on how to maximise performance when selecting and developing personnel as well as becoming a skilled practitioner of the EBW questionnaire and report system. It is based on practical exercises in EBW interpretation, feedback and administration. Attending this workshop enables you to use a psychometric test and report system that normally requires a British Psychology Society Level A/B psychometric test qualification to use.
Psychological theory underpinning the workshop
The area of research into emotions and behaviours at work and their measurement has, over the last 10 years, developed into the research area known as Emotional Intelligence (EI). There have been a variety of different models that have been developed to explain EI and it is now a fast-evolving field with links between psychology (educational, evolutionary and social) and business. This workshop explores some of the different models of Emotional Intelligence (such as Mayer and Salovey, Goleman, etc.), but its emphasis is on the Emotional Intelligence model that underpins the Emotions and Behaviours at Work System.

Pre/post work required
Time = Two hours
In the pre-workshop notes we look specifically at the origins of, and theoretical background to, Emotional Intelligence and in particular an online Emotional Intelligence assessment and expert report system (The Emotions and Behaviours at Work System - The EBW). The EBW behavioural clusters and scales, matters of interpretation and the provision of feedback to test users are also covered. We consider when Emotional Intelligence should be used and the practical issues involved in using the EBW system are described.
