Who should attend
We do not assume you have any prior knowledge of CBT, coaching or counselling, even though you may have. The diagrammatic approach presented is new and should be of interest to both newcomers and experienced practitioners.

Workshop overview
Psychologists providing coaching and counselling services often have to work in a tight time frame. The workshop will provide a method of working that enables rapid progress to be made with clients. An introduction will set the model in a practical and theoretical context. This will be followed by a series of practical exercises designed to develop participants understanding and application of the ideas presented.

Aims of the workshop
The workshop will provide participants with a model of psychological functioning that can be used to help rapid progress to be made in both coaching and counselling work.

A theoretical framework derived largely from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) will be presented in a way that does not assume prior knowledge of CBT and should also provide a new way of working for those participants already trained in CBT.

It will provide participants with a conceptual framework and related skills to enable them to make good use of the approach in their own work.

Participants will practice in using the model both in giving and receiving help.

Projected outcomes and benefits of attending
Participants will be able to use a simple model that enables aspects of clients’ psychological functioning to be displayed graphically and with an interactive emphasis. This approach will enable participants to develop their work using ideas drawn largely from CBT. It provides a rapid, powerful approach to the improvement of personal effectiveness and self-management.

Psychological theory underpinning the workshop
The workshop will feature a new approach to the analysis and presentation of psychological functioning using SPACE diagrams. The theoretical underpinnings are largely Cognitive Behavioural however the ideas presented will include a wider selection of relevant ideas drawn from coaching and counselling psychology.

Facilitator details
n_edgerton.jpg Nick is a Chartered Psychologist with some 30 years of professional experience as a psychologist. During this time he has been Head of the Centre for Studies in Counselling at NELP, Chair of the Counselling Psychology Section BPS, developed a new MSc in Counselling Psychology at NELP and developed a Diploma in Career Counselling and Consultancy at Birkbeck College.
He is currently working in private practice offering Counselling Coaching and CBT. He develops and presents training courses for organisations such as the Centre for Coaching in London. Over the years he has been engaged providing consultancy services for numerous organisations including the Civil Service, Oil and Gas industry, Engineering Industry, both in the UK and abroad. The models and approaches he has developed have been used to good effect in university courses, consultancy work and 1:1 work with private clients

c_lewis.jpg Chris Lewis is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist, an Associate Fellow and a past Chair of the Division of Occupational Psychological of The British Psychological Society; he is now Principal of the consultancy Aver Psychology. Formally, he was Course Director of the MSc Occupational and Organisational Psychology at the University of East London, where his main area of teaching was assessment, research methods, and psychometrics. Chris has produced three books and over 100 papers/technical reports. Approximately 15 of these have involved the use of focus group methodology. He has had a long-standing interest in the integration of focus group methods into the evaluation of psychometric assessment tools.
Chris has acted as a consultant to many organisations including the Civil Service, BP, ICI and the Ford Motor Company and numerous local and health authorities. From 1998 - 2003 he served as (consultant) Director of the Civil Service Fast Stream Psychometrics Team.
