Why have these qualifications been introduced?

In recognition of the considerable amount of knowledge and skills now needed to practice clinical neuropsychology. (back to FAQ index)

Do I need the qualification?

The qualification is the only route to Practitioner Full Membership of the Division of Neuropsychology. However, without the qualification you may be entitled to Full or Affiliate membership of the Division. (back to FAQ index)

Where can I find information about the qualification?

A) from the BPS website ( http://www.bps.org.uk)
B) from the Examinations Team at the BPS offices in Leicester (Jean Arnold 0116 252 9505) (back to FAQ index)

What does the qualification involve?

The qualification involves demonstrating competencies in clinical practice, underpinning knowledge and research within the field of either adult clinical neuropsychology or paediatric clinical neuropsychology. Candidates will be expected to engage in supervised clinical practice with an approved supervisor, to sit examinations set by the Board of Examiners and to have conducted a piece of research. There are a number of accredited courses that assist candidates in gaining the underpinning knowledge and successful completion of the courses which would exempt the candidate from the examinations set by the Board of Examiners. Exemptions may be made for relevant recent research. (back to FAQ index)

Can I enroll for both the Paediatric and Adult qualifications?

It was not originally envisaged that applicants would chose to complete both qualifications. At present applicants are advised to register for one qualification initially. The Board of Examiners is looking at the areas of overlap between the two courses. Applicants are reminded that completion of either the Paediatric or the Adult course will confer eligibility for Practitioner Full Membership of the Division of Neuropsychology. (back to FAQ index)

How do I enroll?

To register you need to request an enrolment form from The Registrar, Board of Examiners for Clinical Neuropsychology at the BPS in Leicester. There is an initial charge of for registration (see BPS site for details). Before returning the enrolment form you will need to identify your Clinical Supervisor and, if required, your Research Supervisor (back to FAQ index)

Who are approved Clinical Supervisors?

In order to be eligible for approval Clinical Supervisors would normally be Practitioner Full Members of the DoN and to be currently in a relevant clinical post. Clinical Supervisors must be approved by the Chief Supervisor of the BoE.. Supervisors do not need to apply for approval until they are approached by a candidate wishing to register. (back to FAQ index)

What happens next?

Together with your Clinical Supervisor you will outline a plan of training. You will need to register for each of the three parts of the qualification, paying the required fee at the time of registration. You can apply for exemptions for one or more parts of the examination and will be required to submit evidence in support of your application. You need to ensure you have an approved supervisor and then submit a supervision plan jointly with them. (back to FAQ index)

How do I gain exemptions?

a)Research

Research in clinical neuropsychology that has been examined or published in the 3 years prior to registration may confer an exemption from the research component. Your research will be judged against the standard normally required for the research component.
