The Division of Educational & Child Psychology (DECP) is part of The British Psychological Society. The Division's aims include:

  • promoting learning, development and the general well-being of children and young people within their families, communities and schools
  • raising the profile of educational psychology within the wider community of psychologists through close links with the Society’s Research Board and Professional Practice Board and the Division of Clinical Psychology, to ensure the views and needs of educational psychologists are recognised within the wider community of psychologists.
  • participating in national policy consultations

Be part of it

To encourage trainee educational psychologists to join the Division of Educational and Child Psychology we have introduced a special student rate of £25 per year. Benefits of being part of DECP include:

  • Free subscription to the DECP publications Educational & Child Psychology and 'Debate'. Both publications are published four times a year to highlight topical professional issues.
  • Opportunities to find out about current developments in research and practice by attending the DECP Annual Conference which takes place every January.
  • Access to working party reports and other useful guides of the Division on a range of issues.
  • Consultation and guidance on a range of professional issues.

Training

The DECP is committed to maintaining high standards of professional training. We are keen to ensure that the interests and welfare of trainee educational psychologists are listened to and we monitor and encourage the continued professional development of educational psychologists through links with the DECP Training Committee and the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC).

From 1 July 2009, the Health Professions Council (HPC) will take over as the regulatory body for practitioner psychologists. Their role is to protect the public by setting and regulating standards of training, professional skills and conduct.

Committee involvement

Members of the Division have exciting opportunities to become involved with the DECP Committee. Nominations are invited each autumn for representation from both trainee educational psychologists and full members of the Division.

The work of the committee is vital in leading the profession forward and seeks new members, with new ideas for co-option on a regular basis.
