Riding the Tide - Counselling Psychology Goes Forward
2009 is likely to be a time of great upheaval for Counselling Psychology, as it is for all "talking" therapies. Registration, and the consequent changes in the Society itself will affect us all. The challenge is to maintain that which is good by whatever means available to us, and to recognise and seize new opportunities to make improvements for our clients and for the profession. This won’t be easy, but a young profession is best placed to adapt and fulfill new roles. This year could be one in which we stumble without direction, or one in which we evolve our own distinctive identity purposefully and courageously. This conference is designed to play its part in that process.
We are delighted to annouce our four keynote speakers who will contribute enourmously to the event:
- Mick Cooper, Professor of Counselling at the University of Strathclyde, and co-Director of the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology, Glasgow Caledonian University/University of Strathclyde, currently seeking accreditation
- Diane Hammersely, Private Practice and member of many key DCoP committees and author of many DCoP documents
- Stephen Joseph, Professor of Psychology, Health and Social Care, Centre for Trauma, Resilience and Growth, University of Nottingham
- Phil Mollon, Head of Clinical Psychology, Stevenage Hospital

The call for submissions is now open!
The conference committee particularly invites submissions on the broad theme of ‘Riding the tide - Counselling Psychology goes forward". Papers symposia and workshop which stimulate us to thoughtful and vigorous action are encouraged. The committee invites potential presenters to be creative in their interpretation of this theme.
Papers, Symposia, Workshops and Posters are invited on any subject
interpreted by the theme of the conference. These might include:
- Change and transitions which have been successfully made
- Motivation counselling psychology in change situations
- Organisation issues and strategies as they relate to Counselling Psychology
- Client responses to changes in organisational and wider cultural change
The ideas presented above are intended to stimulate your thinking about what you might be able to bring to the conference rather than to define the scope.
High quality submissions that do not immediately respond to the theme of the conference, but which contribute to excellence within the profession are also welcome.
These may include:
- Clinical experience
- Research findings
- Any findings based on client responses
- Discussion papers which are well researched and which represent new thinking. Such papers need to represent a range of options and a clearly argued pathway to the writer’s conclusion
All submissions must be submitted onto the online submission system. By using our web-based system, you can manage your submission by adding, editing and saving your work before submitting your application. Once your application is submitted you will receive an instant email notification of receipt. If you are a new user, you will need to register onto the system.
