The construct validity of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) methodology when used to detect racist job applicants

P. Jones
Shire Professionals

This paper summaries the development of ‘Implicitly’, a web- or PC-based instrument designed to detect job applicants who have racist beliefs or exhibit racist behaviour. Based on implicit association theory (IAT) it addresses the concerns of Blanton and Jaccard (2006) around construct validity and arbitrary measurement by IAT technology by taking a self report measure of racist beliefs and behaviours and exploring the relationship between ‘Implicitly’ scores and these measures. The use of ‘Implicitly’ in practice is discussed.
