Overview

Thursday 25 February, 0930 - 1700

This course is about the practicalities of designing a leadership development programme. The concept of leadership development raises initial questions about what leadership is, how it can be developed, and whether a leadership development programme will deliver what an organisation needs. This is a practical event that examines what can be delivered and what outcomes can reasonably be expected - at all levels - from a leadership development programme.

The course is based on experience of designing and delivering leadership development programmes with components such as development centres, coaching, 360 degree appraisal, psychometric assessment, training events and action learning sets.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • What is a leadership development programme? Looking at it from different perspectives including individual and the organisation;
  • What your client can reasonably hope to achieve from it - and how to temper their expectations;
  • Leadership development programme elements (such as development centres, coaching, psychometric assessment, feedback, action learning sets, training and 360 degree appraisal) - when to use them, how to integrate them and get the most out of them;
  • The output - what managers and clients will expect as a result of a leadership development programme. This will include some guidelines on writing development reports for managers and how to get the most out of a feedback meeting;
    The concept of ‘duty of care’ in relation to a leadership development programme and how to handle tricky situations;
  • What you can do to evaluate a leadership development programme - how to know if your programme has delivered better leadership;
  • Overall, how to reasonably accommodate the high expectations of clients and deliver something that will work for them.
