Persecutory delusions, the unfounded beliefs that others intend harm to the individual, are a major psychiatric problem. In the past decade they have become the focus of considerable psychological research.
Dr Freeman and colleagues have developed a specific cognitive model for understanding the formation, maintenance and distress of paranoid ideation. These ideas have been incorporated into a cognitive-behavioural therapy book: Overcoming Paranoid and Suspicious Thoughts. The book details a self-help programme for individuals with paranoid thoughts, but also serves as an aid for therapists working with clients. In a clear and accessible style the book explains how paranoid and suspicious fears arise and presents practical steps to deal with them. The book presents personal accounts by those affected by paranoid thoughts and includes questionnaires and exercises to help readers learn about and combat their fears.
In this workshop the book will be drawn upon to help clinicians formulate and treat persecutory delusions. The most recent developments in therapeutic approaches for paranoia by Dr Freeman and colleagues will also be presented.
