CLARIFICATION REGARDING THE CRITERIA FOR APPROVAL AS A SUPERVISOR/CO-ORDINATOR OF TRAINING

As you will be aware the current Candidate Handbooks for the Society’s Postgraduate Qualifications state that Supervisors/Co-Ordinators of Training need to be Chartered XX Psychologists (with XX being the area of psychology ie Counselling, Forensic, Health etc). However when the Practitioner Psychologist Section of the Health Professions Council’s Register opened on 1 July 2009 this changed the situation.

Specific titles have been protected by the HPC and the term Chartered XX Psychologist no longer exists. For the sake of ease the area of forensic psychology will be used as the example. The term Forensic Psychologist is now the protected title for anyone who is practising in the field of forensic psychology and registered with the HPC. The HPC Standards of Education and Training require that trainees on HPC approved qualifications must be supervised by someone on the relevant Section of the HPC Register. This being the case any Supervisor for a candidate on the Diploma in Forensic Psychology would need to fulfil the following criteria:

a) Be a Chartered Member of the Society

b) Be a Full Member of the Division of Forensic Psychology

c) Be on the Practitioner Psychologist Section of the HPC Register as a Forensic Psychologist

The Candidate Handbooks are currently being updated for each qualification to show these changes and these will be launched early in 2010. Further details will be posted on this website and communicated to candidates directly in due course.

In the meantime please continue with your qualification using the Candidate Handbook that you currently have.

Recording of viva examinations for the Society's postgraduate qualifications

Viva examinations for the Society's postgraduate qualifications may now be recorded if the relevant Board of Assessors wish to do so. Those candidates who are affected by this will be informed when the relevant Board of Assessors decides to take on this procedure for its vivas. The protocol for the recoding of viva examinations is available below.

Please direct any queries regarding this matter to the relevant Qualifications Officer.

Work submitted for assessment

All work submitted as part of a Society qualification becomes the property of the Society. The Society will retain work in secure facilities for as long as it deems necessary for the purposes of its qualifications.
In most circumstances work cannot be returned to candidates who should retain their own copies. For some qualifications logbooks are returned to candidates and this is specified in the relevant qualifications handbook. In these cases candidates are still advised to retain their own copy in case of accidental loss or damage in transit.
Examination submissions are the property of the Society and will not be released to candidates under any circumstances.

Appeals

In February of 2004 the Membership and Professional Training Board of the BPS approved a process for administering appeals. The appeals process is designed to be equitable and transparent and has been developed to enable the processing of appeals against decisions of the Boards of Examiners.
