Health Psychology is the practice and application of psychological research into behaviour relevant to health, illness and healthcare.
What qualifications in Health Psychology does the
Society offer?
The Qualification in Health Psychology (Stage 2)
consists of structured and assessed supervised practice and the demonstration
of competence in Health Psychology through a portfolio of evidence and viva
voce (oral examination). This is the alternative route to completing Stage
2 training for those who are unable to attend a Society-accredited doctoral programme in health psychology.
In order to be eligible to enrol for the QHP (Stage 2), an applicant must have the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC), current Graduate Membership of the Society, and must also have successful completed Stage 1 training in Health Psychology. An applicant will usually be working in a health setting which allows them to fulfil the competences which underpin the QHP (Stage 2).
Completion of the QHP (Stage 2) confers eligibility to apply to the Health Professions Council (HPC) for registration as a health psychologist.
It
is
a legal requirement that anyone who wishes to practice using a title
protected by the Health Professions Order 2001 is on the HPC Register.
The title of Health Psychologist is one such legally protected
title. For more information please see the HPC
website.
How do I achieve a Stage 1 qualification?
In order to achieve Stage 1 training, you must complete a Society-accredited MSc course in Health Psychology. Until recently, the Society offered it's own "independent route" Stage 1 qualification, however this is no longer open to new registrants.
How can I find out more about the QHP (Stage 2)?
To find out more about the QHP (Stage 2), you may
find it helpful to visit the Downloads webpage, where
you can download many useful documents such as the current Candidate Handbook
(launched in November 2009) and Regulations.
Supervisors now have a dedicated
webpage where those who are already in this role for a candidate(s), or are
considering taking up this role, can find out more about the role.
