Clinical Psychology

What is Clinical Psychology?

Clinical Psychologists aim to reduce psychological distress and to enhance and promote psychological well being. They work with people with mental or physical health problems throughout the lifespan.

What qualifications in Clinical Psychology does the Society offer?

The Society offers a Statement of Equivalence in Clinical Psychology. This exists to enable people who have trained overseas, or in another area of applied psychology, to qualify as a Clinical Psychologist in the UK without having to undertake a complete clinical psychology training course. See the Downloads page for a copy of the regulations.

Who is the qualification for?

The Statement of Equivalence in Clinical Psychology is undertaken by those psychologists who have the Graduate Basis for Registration (GBR) and hold a qualification which partially fulfils the qualification requirements for the registration as a Chartered Clinical Psychologist. Such psychologists may be seeking lateral transfer from another branch of applied psychology, may hold a research degree in a clinical subject or may possess a qualification in clinical psychology obtained overseas which does not fully meet UK training requirements. The Committee for the Scrutiny of Individual Clinical Qualifications (CSICQ) determines the further training requirements for all individuals. CSICQ will therefore:

  • Administer the applications process for individuals wishing to obtain a Statement of Equivalence in Clinical Psychology and
  • Determine the training requirements for individuals wishing to obtain a Statement of Equivalence in Clinical Psychology

Candidates for the Statement of Equivalence will usually be working in a clinical setting.
