How many CPD hours does the Society recommend psychologists should undertake each year?

Answer: 40 hours

The Society recommends that you spend a minimum of 40 hours engaging in CPD activity each year. Some of our divisions recommend more, for example, if you are a full-time Clinical Psychologist the Division of Clinical Psychology recommends a minimum of 70 hours CPD activity each year. The Society no longer undertakes formal monitoring of Chartered Psychologists’ CPD, since the HPC as the regulator of the profession now have this responsibility*. We are able to devote our resources to providing support for members through advice and guidance on CPD as well as offering CPD opportunities. More information and guidance including the Society’s CPD Policy can be found in the CPD Resources section of our website.

*The Science Council’s CPD standards were published in 2011 and annual CPD activity is expected from all Chartered Scientists. As of 2012, the Science Council requires the Society to introduce annual monitoring of Chartered Scientists’ CPD. The key stages of the Society’s CPD monitoring process appear on the Society’s Chartered Scientist webpage.

When will the HPC start to monitor practitioner psychologists’ CPD?

Answer: March 2013

In March 2013 the Health Profession’s Council (HPC) will send out registration renewal letters. A percentage of registrants will be asked to submit a CPD profile as part of the CPD monitoring processes. The HPC will require an up-to-date and accurate record (with supporting evidence) of CPD activities for the preceding two years. As this date draws closer, keeping an accurate record of your CPD activity becomes more & more important in case you are selected for audit. Each time the profession renews its registration, a CPD audit will take place. The Society has been working with the HPC to develop example profiles for each domain. These, along with information on the HPC monitoring processes, and their assessment criteria can be found on the HPC website.
